The Institute of Cosmetology, Esthetics & Massage offers a 12-week class for licensed massage therapists to enhance their skill set and take their practice further. The hands-on course covers techniques that therapists will use to create a more effective protocol for their clients. Skills such as deep tissue and hot stone massage set therapists apart from others, making them more sought after by potential employees. The Advanced Massage Class also prepares therapists for the CIDESCO Body Therapy Certificate examination.
Students will learn how to use the CIDESCO body analysis sheet to determine contra-indications and general information to assist in the analysis. Other topics include posture, measuring techniques, figure faults, skin and muscle conditions and BMI calculations.
Heat therapy includes sauna and steam baths, infra-red lamps and paraffin wax baths. Students will learn the rationale for use of heat, physiological effects of heat on the body, methods of applying heat generally and locally, and indications for using heat in body treatments.
Mechanical massage covers the gyratory, percussion and other audio-sonic vibrators and their physiological effects. Students will learn the differences between handheld and floor standing vibrators, skin and client preparation plus choice of medium for mechanical massage, identification of applicators and their effects, and indications for use and contra-indication to use of mechanical massage
Galvanic Body Treatments
Galvanic body treatment teaches students electrical current and the rationale for the use of galvanic treatments. Students will learn polar effects under the cathode and anode, iontophoresis in body therapy, and products used in body therapy and their effects including active ingredients. Other topics include indications for use and contra-indication to use of galvanic current body treatments, knowledge of thermal and chemical burns, including the appearance and reasons for occurrence, and precautions to take to avoid the dangers of galvanic current.
Students will learn different types of body treatments performed in spas such as exfoliation, wraps and masks. Students will have a sound knowledge of the contra-indications, methods of application, benefits, and the variety of scrubs, brushes and exfoliation products available. Body wraps and masks cover the contra-indications, method of application and benefits.
Electrical Muscle Stimulation
Electrical muscle stimulation covers electrical currents used such as faradic type, EMS, NMS, microcurrent and interferential. Students will learn the rationale for use, indications and contra-indications of EMS; pulses, impulses and stimuli; and frequencies employed in muscle stimulation in body therapy.
Hot Stone Massage
Hot stone massage is a massage therapy technique used to ease and relax tense muscles and damaged soft tissue. Students will be taught the various types, textures and shapes of different stones, and the benefits and contra-indications of hot stone massage.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage
Manual Lymphatic drainage is a type of massage that encourages the movement of lymph fluids around the body, helping reduce swelling and improve circulation. Students will be taught the location of the lymph nodes and the lymph fluid pathways, and the benefits, indications and contra-indications.
Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage is a massage therapy that involves applying firm pressure and slow strokes to reach deep layers of muscle and fascia. Students will cover techniques and protocols to alleviate pain and discomfort in the hip, back, shoulder and neck.
Prenatal massage has been shown to reduce anxiety, decrease symptoms of depression, relieve muscle aches and joint pains, and improve labor outcomes and newborn health. Students learn the benefits and contra-indications of prenatal massage.
